Ecological service‐learning positively impacts classroom climate and empowers undergraduates for environmental action

Service-learning (SL) is a type of participatory action-oriented, experiential learning that connects course content with need in the community. This particularly well suited to environmentally themed courses as student action can have positive impact on environment while developing students' conservation ethics and “soft skills” required for many jobs. SL was incorporated into one two sections an existing, junior-level elective plant biology. As service activity, undergraduates participated removal invasive species (Lespedeza cuneata) along local greenway. We asked whether students who modest amount demonstrated greater knowledge biology, stronger connections their class community, increased self-efficacy environmental than do not participate SL. Data knowledge, perceptions classroom climate, views one's ability positively were collected through surveys given at beginning end semester. Instructor-generated questions published, validated surveys—the Connected Classroom Climate Inventory Self-Efficacy Environmental Action scale—were used. found showed slightly sense community peers, which has been effects learning, but perception own be agent social change.
